Basic Cake Making Supplies
You'd be surprised by how little you need to actually get started in making your own kids' cakes.  You
don't need a chef's kitchen or a high powered mixer or a ton of decorating supplies.  In fact, it takes just a
few of the basics when you're starting out.  You can always invest in more cake decorating supplies if you
find that you're making more cakes and having fun doing it.  Here's a list of the basics to get you started:

Boxed cake mixes
Pre-made decorator icing (or make your own)
Pre-made and pre-colored fondant (or make your own)
Character pan (see below for where to find these) or regular cake pan
Cake topper (see below for where to find these)
Decorating bags (plastic disposable ones work fine and are relatively cheap)
The most common decorating tips: 3 (round), 16, 18 & 21 (open star tips), 48 (basketweave), 104
(petal), 190 (drop flower) and 352 (leaf)
A few couplers
Spatulas for smoothing out your frosting
Food coloring (gels are best for getting brilliant colors)
Some sprinkles, edible glitter, shimmer dust, etc for the finishing touches
Ready-To-Use Fondant
If you want to buy pre-made and pre-colored fondant then two of the best tasting brands out there are
Satin Ice and Choco Pan. They come in a variety of colors and are ready-to-use right out of the tub.
